General Questions
What is the M50 toll and where is the toll point located?
The M50 toll is a charge for using a section of Dublin's orbital motorway. The M50 is Ireland's busiest road, forming a C-shaped route around Dublin and connecting major national routes.
The single toll point is located between Junction 6 (N3 Blanchardstown) and Junction 7 (N4 Lucan). This section was formerly known as the West-Link toll bridge. You only pay the toll if your journey takes you through this specific section of the motorway.
Is the M50 toll a barrier-free system?
Yes, the M50 uses a barrier-free tolling system. There are no toll booths or barriers to stop at. Instead, overhead cameras use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology to capture your vehicle registration as you pass through the toll point at normal motorway speeds.
If you have an eFlow tag, it is detected electronically. Otherwise, your registration plate is used to identify your vehicle for billing purposes.
Who operates the M50 toll?
The M50 toll is operated by eFlow on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the government agency responsible for national roads. eFlow handles all aspects of toll collection, account management, and customer service.
Do I pay the toll every time I use the M50?
No, you only pay the toll if your journey takes you through the toll point between Junction 6 and Junction 7. If you enter and exit the M50 without passing through this section, no toll is charged.
For example, if you travel from the M1 (north) to Junction 9 (N7), you would not pass through the toll point and would not pay. However, if your journey takes you from the M1 to Junction 5 or beyond, you would pass through the toll section.
Payment Questions
How much does it cost to use the M50?
As of January 2026, the toll rates for a standard car are:
- Tag Account: €2.60
- Video Account: €3.20
- Unregistered: €3.80
Rates vary by vehicle type, with heavier vehicles paying more. See our Rates & Payment page for the full rate table.
When do I need to pay if I do not have an account?
If you do not have a Tag or Video account with eFlow, you must pay by 8pm the day after your journey. For example, if you travel through the toll point on Monday, you must pay by 8pm on Tuesday.
This deadline applies regardless of weekends or public holidays. Failure to pay by this deadline will result in penalty charges.
How can I pay the M50 toll?
There are several ways to pay the M50 toll:
- Online: Visit eflow.ie and pay using your vehicle registration number.
- eFlow App: Download the official app for iOS or Android to pay on the go.
- Phone: Call 0818 50 10 50 (Ireland) or +353 1 461 0122 (International).
- Retail Outlets: Pay at over 1,000 Payzone locations across Ireland.
- Automatic: If you have a Tag or Video account, payment is processed automatically.
Can I pay for multiple journeys at once?
Yes, when paying online or via the app, you can view and pay for any unpaid journeys associated with your vehicle registration. The system will show all outstanding tolls that can be paid in a single transaction.
Remember, you should pay within the deadline for each individual journey to avoid penalties on specific trips.
Account Questions
What is the difference between a Tag account and a Video account?
Tag Account: You receive a physical electronic tag that you mount on your windscreen. The tag communicates with the toll system as you pass through, and payment is deducted automatically. Tag accounts offer the lowest rates and work on all toll roads in Ireland.
Video Account: You register your vehicle online without needing a physical tag. The ANPR cameras capture your registration plate, and the toll is automatically charged to your account. Rates are slightly higher than Tag accounts but still cheaper than unregistered payment.
Is there a fee to open an eFlow account?
No, there is no fee to open either a Tag or Video account with eFlow. The electronic tag is provided free of charge when you open a Tag account. You simply need to maintain credit on your account (for prepaid) or provide valid payment details (for postpaid).
Can I register multiple vehicles on one account?
Yes, you can add multiple vehicles to a single eFlow account. This is convenient for families or businesses with several vehicles. Each vehicle can have its own tag, or you can use video registration for some vehicles.
All tolls for registered vehicles are billed to the same account, making it easy to manage and track expenses.
What if my tag is not working or was not detected?
If your tag fails to register, the ANPR cameras should still capture your registration plate. If your vehicle registration is linked to your account, the toll will be charged via video billing instead.
If you believe there is a problem with your tag, contact eFlow customer service. Common issues include incorrect tag positioning, a depleted tag battery, or obstructions on the windscreen. eFlow will replace faulty tags at no cost.
Penalty Questions
What happens if I forget to pay the M50 toll?
If you fail to pay by 8pm the day after your journey, a penalty process begins:
- First penalty: An additional €4 is added to your toll amount.
- After 14 days: A further €51 is added if still unpaid.
- After 56 days: Another €128 is added.
- Legal proceedings: Continued non-payment may result in the matter being referred to solicitors and potentially to court.
To avoid penalties, pay promptly or set up an automatic payment account.
I received a penalty notice but I already paid. What should I do?
If you have proof of payment (such as a confirmation email or receipt), contact eFlow customer service immediately at 0818 50 10 50 or +353 1 461 0122. Have your payment reference and vehicle registration ready.
Errors can occasionally occur, and eFlow will investigate and correct any mistakes. Keep copies of all payment confirmations until any dispute is resolved.
Can I appeal a penalty charge?
Yes, you can appeal a penalty if you believe it was issued in error. Contact eFlow customer service to explain your situation. Common grounds for appeal include:
- Payment was made within the deadline (with proof)
- The vehicle was not at the toll point (e.g., cloned plates)
- System error in capturing your registration
- Mitigating circumstances
Appeals are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If your appeal is unsuccessful and you disagree, you may seek further resolution through legal channels.
Visitors & Rental Cars
Can I use the M50 with a rental car?
Yes, you can use the M50 with a rental car. However, the toll payment arrangements vary by rental company:
- Tag included: Some rental companies include a toll tag. Charges are added to your final bill, often with an administrative fee.
- Video billing: The rental company may have the vehicle registered for video billing and pass charges to you.
- Self-pay: Some companies require you to pay tolls yourself by the 8pm deadline.
Always ask your rental company about their toll policy when collecting the vehicle.
I am visiting from abroad. How do I pay the M50 toll?
If you are driving a foreign-registered vehicle (e.g., from the UK or mainland Europe), you can pay the toll online at eflow.ie using your vehicle registration number.
Enter your registration exactly as it appears on your plates. Payment must be made by 8pm the day after your journey. International credit and debit cards are accepted.
Note that processing foreign registrations may take longer, so proactively paying rather than waiting for a bill is recommended.
Do Northern Ireland vehicles need to pay the M50 toll?
Yes, all vehicles passing through the M50 toll point are subject to the toll charge, regardless of where they are registered. Northern Ireland (UK) vehicles must pay by 8pm the following day, just like any other unregistered vehicle.
Frequent cross-border travellers may benefit from opening an eFlow Tag account, which works across all Irish toll roads.
What if I forget to pay while visiting Ireland?
If you miss the payment deadline, penalties will be applied and eFlow will attempt to trace the registered keeper of the vehicle. For foreign vehicles, this process may take longer, but penalties still apply.
Outstanding tolls and penalties from foreign-registered vehicles can be pursued through international debt collection processes. It is much simpler (and cheaper) to pay promptly.
If you have already left Ireland and realise you forgot to pay, go to eflow.ie and pay online as soon as possible. Contact eFlow if you need assistance.
